From sun-drenched shores to well-loved bookshops and cherished local haunts, longtime East Ender Emma Roberts offers an elegant study in the artful rhythm of Hamptons living.
By all accounts, Emma Roberts has long mastered the balancing act between Hollywood stardom and quiet sophistication—but out East, she’s found the perfect rhythm. “I’m an avid reader of the magazine, and no one is more thrilled than my mom to see me on this cover,” she beams, instantly grounding our conversation in her signature blend of charm, intelligence and authenticity. A longtime devotee of the East End, Roberts doesn’t just summer in the Hamptons—she immerses herself in it, relishing the community, the rituals and the quiet revelations that shape each season.
Her ties to the region run deep, beginning with her mother, who once worked at the legendary Corner Bar and now lives out East year-round. “I was coming out here all the time to see her,” Roberts shares. “Fifteen years ago, in the winter, it was like The Shining sometimes out here. And now it’s like summer all year, which is so beautiful to see. … I’ve fallen more and more in love with it as the years have gone on— especially after having my son. I see the Hamptons in a whole different light through his eyes, which is so magical.”
Sag Harbor is especially close to her heart. “I love Sagg Main Beach. It’s kind of my routine in the summer—I’ll take my son to camp and bring my book with me to the beach and just sit by myself for an hour. There’s nothing like it.” When she’s not beachside with a novel, you might find her fueling up at Jack’s Stir Brew Coffee (“Teddy Boy is my favorite”), treasure hunting at estate sales or strolling The Madoo Conservancy with her son to visit the ducks.
Roberts also knows her way around a proper East End meal. “The award goes to Bostwick’s for the best lobster roll,” she says, confidently wading into sacred territory. “My mom and I love to go there for a lobster roll and piña colada—it just feels so summery.” Dinner with her fiance at East Hampton Grill is a ritual, too. “We always take a deck of cards and play over dinner. That’s always my favorite thing to do as soon as I get here.”
Roberts is also an enthusiastic supporter of local culture and creatives, from New York Pilates to BookHampton (“one of my favorite bookstores in the world”) to working with photographers like Victor Demarchelier. “We did a DÔEN shoot at his house out here, and that’s what I love—it’s so spontaneous. You run into people, and things happen. You can be grabbing a coffee and end up making art together,” she says. “It just feels more like a community way of life out here—which, to me, is always more inspiring,” she muses. “It makes me want to read more, makes me want to cook more.”
Roberts is bringing that spirit of creative spontaneity to her career. With upcoming roles in a psychological thriller (The Technique, opposite Noomi Rapace) and a romantic comedy (Marriage Material, where she plays a dating app mogul), Roberts oscillates between genres with rare ease. “I can always tell from the first few pages of a script if it’s something I want to do. A lot of roles have found me at the right place at the right time,” she explains. “Palo Alto was one of those, and it’s so special to me,” she says of the Gia Coppola-directed cult classic. “I love that people are still discovering it.”
Beyond acting, her production company, Belletrist— named after her literary-minded book club—is thriving. “We’re in season three of Tell Me Lies, which I produce. I read the book in one sitting years ago on the beach. Now, seeing everyone’s reactions on social media… it’s beyond what I imagined,” she says. Producing has given her a fuller creative perspective. “You get to be with something from beginning, middle and end,” she reflects on the producing process. “As an actress, you show up and hope for the best. Producing, you’re part of the whole process, which is really rewarding.”
Roberts’ creative spark also extends into the realm of development, most recently through a buzzy new project that brings her back to her roots—literally. “Getting to work with Kim was so much fun because we passed each other growing up in Calabasas together,” she says of her American Horror Story: Delicate co-star Kim Kardashian. “That led us to another project we have in development, a TV show called Calabasas, based on the memoir If You Lived Here You’d Be Famous by Now. We’re turning that into a show with Netflix, so that will be really fun.” With its satirical take on suburbia, celebrity and coming of age in the social media era, Calabasas promises to be a sharp, stylish mirror held up to the place both Roberts and Kardashian once called home.
A devoted bibliophile, Roberts is spending the season thoughtfully making her way through a curated stack of summer reads. “I like to pick a stack of books instead of one long one—so by the end of summer, I can look at the pile and feel more accomplished. That’s my trick,” she shares with a smile.
Whether reading seaside or simply unwinding on Sagg Main Beach, Roberts moves through her Hamptons routine with practiced ease. “There’s just nothing like it,” she says. “I’ve been to beaches everywhere, but when I’m on Sagg Main, that feels like home to me—more so even than Malibu, and I grew up going to Malibu. Sagg Main has my heart, for sure.”
