Emma Roberts Surprises Aunt with Home Makeover | Celebrity IOU
Sunday, Jul 2, 2023
Emma Roberts helped transform her Aunt Mela’s kitchen into a functional animal-friendly cooking space on Monday’s season six episode of Celebrity IOU on HGTV.
Though Aunt Moo, whose real name is Mela, isn’t related to Roberts by blood, the American Horror Story actress says it doesn’t make any difference to their extremely tight bond. As long as she can remember, Mela has always had her back. Roberts recalls all the support Mela has given to the star’s mom, who raised her alone until she was about seven years old.
The Scream Queens star also touched on all the ways Mela has spread her love and loyalty outside of their family: She works tirelessly at her self-owned hair salon, but in her free time, makes wigs and other hair pieces for cancer patients. She’s also “obsessed” with rescuing animals — especially dogs.
Roberts, with help from Property Brothers stars Drew and Jonathan Scott, was able to execute a total kitchen makeover while Mela was away in Oregon rescuing a new four-legged family member.

Thursday, May 25, 2023
EXCLUSIVE: Vertical has snapped up North American rights out of Cannes to Hot Mess, a new comedy starring Emma Roberts (Madame Web) which is in pre-production for a shoot early next year.
The film repped internationally at Cannes by Mister Smith Entertainment has also already locked in distribution agreements with IDC in Latin America, Capelight in Germany, Ascot Elite in Switzerland and Nordisk in Scandinavia, with deals for other major territories in closing discussions at present.
Hot Mess marks the feature directorial debut of Katie Locke O’Brien, whose 2018 short film Have It All was a finalist for HBO’s Insider Comedy Short Challenge and a semi-finalist of the NBC Short Film Competition. Written by Gabrielle D’Amico, the film follows Laurel Mack (Roberts), who, after imploding in the worst way possible on a wildly popular American dating show, must do the ultimate walk of shame…back to her hometown. Having failed to win love on the show, she finds herself living in her quirky parents’ basement, without any friends and constantly bumping into her miserable ex the whole town adores. In the face of the never-ending mockery of all who witnessed her public meltdown, Laurel ultimately embarks on a journey to discover self-love and real connections with others.
Pic’s producers are Debbie Liebling, Maggie Malina and Laura Lewis.
Said Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey of the acquisition, “We are thrilled to be in on the ground floor of this fresh, funny, and heartfelt story under the direction of Katie Locke O’Brien. We have had a fantastic track record with Emma this past year, including the hit Maybe I Do, and look forward to seeing her exceptional talent bring ‘Laurel’ to life in Hot Mess.”
Added the film’s producers, “We are thrilled to be partnering with Vertical Entertainment to bring Hot Mess to screens across North America. Vertical has built a name for themselves in the comedy space and we love that they also recognized the freshness and relevance of Hot Mess as their next success story.”
Emma Roberts To Star In Comedy ‘Hot Mess’; Mister Smith Launching Project At Cannes Market
Tuesday, May 9, 2023
Emma Roberts is set to star in comedy Hot Mess, which David Garrett’s Mister Smith Entertainment is launching at the Cannes Market next week.
The project marks the feature directorial debut of Katie Locke O’Brien, whose 2018 short film Have It All was a finalist for HBO’s Insider Comedy Short Challenge and a semi-finalist at the NBC Short Film Competition.
Hot Mess, which is written by Gabrielle D’Amico, follows Laurel Mack (Roberts) who, after imploding in the worst way possible on a wildly popular American dating show, must do the ultimate walk of shame…back to her hometown. Having failed to win love on the show, she finds herself living in her quirky parents basement, without any friends, constantly bumping into the miserable ex the whole town adores, while experiencing the constant mockery of all who witnessed her public meltdown. She embarks on a hilarious and heartfelt journey to discover self-love and, with that, real connections with others.
Debbie Liebling, Maggie Malina and Laura Lewis are producing the project, which is currently in pre-production and scheduled to start shooting in early 2024. Mister Smith Entertainment is launching international sales in Cannes while Lewis at Rebelle Media is repping North American rights.
“Hot Mess is a sharp, witty script that stood out to me as a fresh story of a woman finding her place in a world ruled by social media and outsized expectations,” said Locke O’Brien. “I am so eager to bring this to life with Emma as the perfect Laurel.”
The producers added: “We are thrilled to be partnering with the indomitable force that is Emma Roberts on Hot Mess. She will undoubtedly bring the ferocity, vulnerability and comedic hot-messiness to this character. The time has come for a comedy set in the world of reality dating shows and their hold on our collective consciousness. Kate’s comedic and heartfelt approach will make a very commercial comedy that speaks to anyone seeking self-love.”
Garrett added: “This is such a refreshing and funny take on the world of dating programs and you couldn’t hope for anyone smarter and funnier than Emma Roberts to inhabit the role.”
